Just made it back from Challis. My new rod, reel and myself are no longer virgins when it comes to steelhead.
I had a great weekend. ChromeJunky, Vern, Tob04002, and Scorci were there. I started out Saturday morning with the new rod. The third cast I hooked and landed a 34" wild B-Run. Best fish I hooked all weekend and what a fight. I fished for a while longer and finally landed a 23" keeper. About an hour later I hooked another one, then lost it. The rest of the day was spent being schooled by Vern.
Sunday morning I decided to get up early and brave the cold temps. It did not pan out so well as I never touched a fish until about 3pm. I landed a 24" keeper finally and then hooked into a nice 31" that was a keeper also. I landed one more wild before we headed home. It was a great weekend all around except for the wind that blew off and on at times and the hard ground we slept on. I am to old to tent any more especially after fishing all day.
The rod and reel worked great with no major backlashes. The only ones I got were from my own mistakes, but were never anything more than about 30 sec to fix. My back is still sore after fishing all day, but not nearly as bad as before. It use to be hurting by 11am, but now it takes until around 3pm before the pain sets in. I don't think there is any way around that. It is just part of standing for 10 hours in a river holding and casting a rod.
I like the new setup more and more after using it. I can cast a mile it seems and I really like the small size. I still need some practice on my side casting, but the over head is great. I cast all day dropping my rig within 1-2' of the other side of the river with no problems. Accuracy is very easy and simple after using it for the last 2 days.
Guess I am hooked. Only took 4 trips to finally landed a Steelie, but it was worth it. I am sure I will be up there again soon.
