A couple of years ago I decided I needed/wanted to have a fly rod designed specifically for stillwater trophy trout. As often is the case with me (just ask my wife) the idea grew from one rod to four. Let's be real here, a guy needs a solid back-up and can't afford to waste time changing reel spools when a different line is required [
]
Since I typically fish stillwaters from a toon, I wanted a 9'-6" length rod. It also needed to be a 4-piece to make sure I could take in on a plane if necessary. With the help of a great rod builder, we had Kerry Burkheimer develop a specific taper to suit my needs. As a 6-weight, I wanted it to throw line like a rocket to deal with wind and large flies. As an unexpected treat, Mr. Burkheimer also designed a 2nd tip for the rod that was softer to protect finer tippets when I'm fishing chironomids. The 2nd tip lets me throw a 5-weight line.
In the end, I had four custom rods that are both beautiful to look at and flat throw line/fight fish like no other. Here are a few photos that will let you see what I've got.
