Hooo Man!!!! I blew it!!!
Sorry probably isn't gonna get it here but I am anyway. Gotta explain where this idea came from, though I sorta changed it a bit as far as the bait goes
I grew up in Ely. Back in 1950 ot '51 I spent quite a bit of time with a gentleman who was then the White Pine County game warden. I accompanied him on numerous fish stocking trips around the county. He took me with him one time on a trip to the Nevada state hatchery in Verdi to pick up a truckload of cutthroat fingerlings which we took to a rearing pond on the Swallow ranch in Spring Valley. It was just a rather shallow pond made by a dam that was built around a spring. It was really just used as a holding pond to keep the fish in until they could be transported to be stocked in the headwaters of some of the Spring Valley streams. I accompanied him on a couple of these trips. We packed the fish in 5 gal. milk cans strapped to a pack horse. One on each side. I remember we had to stop about every 20 min. and scoop water from the creek to refill and cool the cans to keep the fish alive.
Back to the gist of the story. The pond was unattended for the most part and some kind of bird(s) was (were)decimating the fish in the holding pond. Somebody came up with the idea of rigging up some fish like I described. I think they just used some of the fingerlings. Anyway, that got rid of the offending bird (s). If memory serves, the same trick was used at the Spring Creek rearing station on Snake Creek to get rid of some herons once too.
Once again, if I ruffled some feathers I'm sorry.
