For covering scent I've used pro bait scent, smelly jelly and some other stuff. Either way I find that a half shredded worm catches a lot of fish. I've learned that if I can half way cover a hook w/ what I refer to as worm burger after a crawler has been hit a few times I seem to catch a lot of fish that way. Maybe it's because it doesn't look like it was prepared that they are more willing to hit. Try your wifes method next time. I do believe we over think the process most the time. Like turkey or goose calling. I repeatedly hear, none of those birds would ever win a calling competition for their species. Maybe for fish they would never win a food tasting competition either?
