Rechargable batteries for Fishin' Buddy?

When I've tried the NiMH they have been fresh off the charger. They work for about 15 minutes before the FB shuts down. The same batteries work fine in other devices which is why I'm thinking maybe the 7.2v they are feeding it just isn't up to snuff.
