You are right about the killing from playing, but that isn't just light tippet which I am sure you know.
I never use smaller tippet than a 6X. And I never play a fish.
There are times that any fly bigger than a 28 just isn't going to work. THE GREEN is a good example at this time of year.
As far as how long one plays a fish is the person, not the gear.
Did I tell you about the 24" brown I landed off a #30 and a Bamboo rod on the Provo? Took maybe 5 minutes.
You really think that those TONS OF DEAD fish were because of small flies? Or maybe from just about anything including treble hook spinners.
