If you are in trophy waters or yellowstone and you wound an illegal fish you must release the fish the best you can.
If my fly is too deep I cut my line as close as I can and do my best to release the fish.
One time in Yellowstone I wounded a greyling. I felt bad knowing the greyling would probably not survive as it was kicking around on the top. I later felt better as an osprey came down and got an easy lunch.[laugh] If doesn't happen very often but if you fish enough even the most careful people will kill a fish unintentionally.
