crappie on top are great fun, and there is no fish i'd rather eat! i did quite a bit of fly fishing for crappie in MN, and my go to fly i would recommend is a "boogle bug" (you can google it). it is essentially a panfish/bass surface popper, but i really like the non-popper style rubber legs patterns in smaller sizes for those delicate mouths. foam ants and beetles will certainly do the trick, but you will see a HUGE hookup increase with the slightly larger hook size.
