what strength rod to use
#2
Honestly, flipping rods don't cast really well. Even though most flipping rods are 7'6"+, they're too stiff to load up (bend) when you're casting. I have a 7'6" flipping stick that I wouldn't even think about taking for shore fishing. Flipping sticks are made to bull-handle fish out of cover, that's the reason they are much more stout but it also kills the casting action.

I'd go with the 7'3" medium heavy (or at least it sounds like a medium heavy). It might be 3 inches shorter, but I'll bet you a pack of senkos and a 1/4 oz tungsten sinker that you'll cast it further. You can flip and pitch with the 7'3" also. I have a 7'2" medium action Shimano Cumara... I use it for some flipping but it'll also cast all the line off your spool with a 1/2 oz rattle trap.
