Getting excited for trout season like me?

I went fishing at sunset today and was using velveeta cheese and 1/4 silver kastmaster. I did not catch 1 fish! I think the problem is the velveeta kept falling off my hook. Should i be using a bobber or a sinker? I tried both methods to no avail. Also is there a secret spot at Sunset where everyone is catching the fish? I try to stay away from the area where they are toy motor boating.
