When I was growing up in the Philippines I used to fish for mudfish which the Thais call snake head fish. I do not know what we would call it here. It is a great eating fish though and gets fairly large, but typically I caught 1 or 2 pounders. I used to take a bamboo stake, split the end, tie about 2 feet of line around the middle of the stake, drive it into the ground at a 45 degree or so angle so it was out at least two or three inches from the shore and pull the line through the split in the stake so the hook and bait were just an inch or two into the top of the water. Live frogs or worms were typical bait. I used to check the stake about three times a day. Single line trot line. In the south, they run a line across rivers or ponds with many hooks as a variation on this theme.
They also used to use dynamite in the coastal areas of the Philippines, but, I think just owning dynamite today could get you into trouble, let alone fishing with it.
