I dont know about catching rainbows after dark- I've only tried one time, and I failed.
I do know that brown trout are nocturnal, and night fishing for them is very popular.

If you are going to the river on a night trip, I would suggest tossing big swimbaits and AC Plugs for those big stripers down there.
