You could look into kite fishing! I use to do it on the alaskan coast for halibut and lincod.
You use regular fishing rod and reel, but you mount your bait on a kite. You mount it with a weak old rubberband or other break free material. You fly the kite with the bail open until you are far enough from the bank. Then you close your bail and give your rod a good jerk. The quick release breaks and you line falls into the water.
