Urban fishing today
#10
Fly Rods go by the weight where bait or spin go by pound.
Fly rods are designed for different species of fish and their weight.
Example:

1 - 3 weight rods, small mountain creeks and fish maybe in the 12" range
4 - 5 weight is a good all around weight rod. Mostly Trout.
The heavier rods like the 8 are good for casting BIG BUGS associated to bass fishing.

Any fish can be landed with a smaller rod if you fight it from the butt of the rod and let the rod do the work, but, it can be harder on the fish.
I have seen 24" trout landed with a 1 weight.

Pick what species you want to target, then get the weight of rod AND the action (that is the most important thing and everyone is different).

But now there is also specialty lines to go with that. It is getting crazy, but when you know what you want, it is nice to know it is out there.
