Saltwater will screw up just about anything. Rods are easy to clean, I wash in fresh water and wipe down with silcon spray. I have rods that cost anywhere from a few dollars from a pawn shop too several hundred custom made so I take care of them to protect my investment.
Best advice is to find a fishing buddy who has been around and get some advice. I am 62 years old and i still pay a guide sometime when i need to learn something new. My best advice is just to do it!! Fish everyday you can and very soon you will Not be new to the salt water.
Reels on the other hand are not so easy to clean, when you wash them in fresh water not all the salt gets cleaned out of the small spaces and WD40 helps and sometimes you just need to take them apart and clean proper like.
