fly reel spinning rod???
#42
I'm with the Flygoddess 110% on this one.

Saving the roll cast as an "advanced" technique dates back to the days when the upstream dry was the only pure flyfishing. And that attitude was wrong on both counts.

There is nothing difficult about a roll cast. Indeed, nowadays, with weight forward lines are the default choice for most people, it's even easier. A whole lot easier, in fact, then learning to make a forward cast.

Roll casting also, as FG points out, gets newbies fishing a lot faster, lets them work close and brushy water, etc. It really should be the first thing taught newbies.

When I started flyfishing I was the only flyfisherman I knew. Had to learn most of it on my own---including teaching myself---from a book--- how to roll cast a DT line.

My first reaction was, "what are they all talking about. There's nothing hard about this." Haven't seen anything in all my years of flyfishing to change my mind about it.
