GOOD POINTS!
I am not sure, but I think all Brook is implying, is cheap gear does not perform great. It can cause an interested person to rethink their fly fishing future.
As Mac said though, there are CHEAP rods that aren't that bad. Unfortunately, it does take a trained eye to find them.
Again, my first rod was the Pfueger. I must admit also, I did loose interest with it. But, the fact that my friends all fly fished, I continued. Later I got a beginners SAGE. Changed my life forever. Gave the Pfueger to a friend that is still using it, so, to each their own.
As far as classifying them.
CHEAP is any rod under $100. Chances are, less guides and made over seas
Shakespear, Pflueger, Eagle Claw, etc.
MID PRICE: $150. to $350. "TO ME ANYWAY" Warranties, nicer hardware, sock or tube or both.
TFO, St. Croix, and the Asia line of Loomis, Winston. And Sage Launch (USA) plus Orvis Clearwater and the TLS series.
UPPER END: $350 and up
Orvis Helios, Zero, T3, All USA made Winston and Loomis, Sage, Scott, T&T, etc.
I might add, e-bay has killer deals on TOP OF THE LINE gear. I have paid FULL price on ONE out of many rods that I own.
This did get off topic, and Jim thank you for posting you question. I hope somewhere in here you got what you were looking for.
