Brook,
[#000000]when we first started discussing this Jim had asked the question of using a fly reel on a spinning outfit.. and I think we all agree that is not a good option.. [/#000000]
.. it was then suggested that he try bubble/fly as an alternative.. we all know it is not fly fishing.. but fishing with a fly.. and in this case.. would of cost Jim very little to get set up..
.. off of that we started talking about starter combos.. and this is where I have a question for you....
[#800000]"But if that's so, why aren't the mid-range kits and equipment being discussed? It's as if "all sides of the issue" include either very cheap crap or very expensive gear. And we both know that's far from the truth. "[/#800000]
[#800000][/#800000]
[#000000]are you saying Pfleuger and Okuma among others are simply pieces of crap?? and should not be used.. [/#000000]
granted .. they are not in the caliber of a Sage, or Reddington, or Orvis and many other top name and very expensive manufacturers out there..
.. to say that anything else (low end pieces of crap) is not worth the time is ludicrous.. a lot of anglers start out with their wally world specials.. whether it be fly fishing.. or spinning.. or baitcasting.. jigging.. you name it.. why do they go there.. because it fits in their budget and its a good way to find out if you really want to stay with it or not.. they are decent.. beat the hell out of and learn setups..
look at it this way.. would you rather lose 40 - 50 dollars if you break a Pfleuger combo.. or 150 - 200 for say a tfo or whiteriver combo.. which would be more discouraging.. 50 bucks.. or 200 bucks in loss???
.. I think the main reason we were suggesting lower end combos was Jim statement that he did not have a lot to spend.. so keep the cost down..
I can tell you from personal experience that if it had not been for that cheap crap shakespeare combo I would not be here.. that piece of crap combo got my interest going and kept me in it.. granted.. after a year I upgraded to a sage launch and a very nice orvis reel .. but it took time to find out what was what .. I knew my limitations finacially when I started and stayed inside them.. and I think that is what Jim is trying to do..
