fly reel spinning rod???
#23
Dryrod,

Are you suggesting that a Fenwick Eagle and SA System 4 were a cheap outfit? Gimme a break, wouldja.

In their day (hell, I remember the hoopla when SA introduced the System reels) they were both high-end equipment, and to compare them to a 27 dollar kit is misleading at best.

The fact is, the el cheapo stuff I'm familiar with can hinder one's ability to learn. The rods are usually way too soft, the reels are cheaply made (not that that matters all that much), and the lines seem to be plastic-coated kite string---which does matter, as lines are actually the be-all and end-all of flyfishing.

I'm am not suggesting that a newbie jump right in to megabucks flyfishing equipment. But a combo kit from a major producer has a lot more going for it. Sure, at about $100-150 you're paying more for it. But it's a balanced outfit that you can learn on well, that you're likely to keep and use, and which, if it turns out flyfishing isn't your thing, has some resale value.

I would hope so. But if that's so, why aren't the mid-range kits and equipment being discussed? It's as if "all sides of the issue" include either very cheap crap or very expensive gear. And we both know that's far from the truth.
