Quite possibly one of the worst decisions ever made was the annual draw down of Little Camas to a mud puddle. One of my most memorable fishing adventures was fishing it in late September the year that I moved here, 1990 and just catching multiple amazing thick and beautiful Rainbows like you're describing.
If you're willing to drive a ways further, Magic does have fish like Little Camas used to offer right now. I fished it two days ago and the fishing was excellent. I brought my float tube with every intention of fly fishing but they were biting on bait so well from the bank that I never even got my float tube out of the bag. I caught 10 or so total, missed a bunch of others and kept 3 nice ones like the one in this picture. Even the "smaller" ones were 12-13 inches.
