I retrieve differently depending on what the water I am fishing looks like. Generally speaking, I like to cast out on a floating line, let it sink for 5 or 6 seconds, then strip in half to one second intervals. If the fish are rising up top I will usually only sink it a couple seconds. That usually does the trick for me for fish feeding on the surface. When I am fishing really high water like yesterday, I put on my heavy sinking line, let it sink to the bottom, then strip it in slowly. When the water is lower and there are actual riffles to fish, I like to dead drift it through with a nymph dropper. Yesterday I dropped a rubber legs off the bottom and that worked great. The woolly bugger is my number one go to fly. Thats the first thing I will usually throw out if I am at a river I have never fished before.
