You want to be able to sight cast them. So, once you find a carp, the best flies to use depend on the water you fish. A lot of people think Carp are dumb, but thats no the case. The best flies to use are imitations of bugs that are in the water your fishing. Of course, there are generic patterns like buggers and haresears and other generic nymphs. But, getting as close to the available food source as you can will work best. I like starting with generic patters. If the carp wont hit that I will start fishing smaller or patterns that more closely relate to the food source.
When you start casting to Carp try and put the fly 2-3 feet ahead of the fish. A lot of times I have had fish hit with no retrieve at all. If they won't hit it like that slowly strip the fly when you think the Carp can see it. If your using the right fly you should get bit. There are times when they want it faster but it seems like most of the time for me a slow to moderate stripping speed works best.
Look for the Carp in shallow water that you can tell are feeding. Its pretty hard fishing for them in open water.
Have FUN!!!!!!! If you have any other questions pm me.
