How important is a fish finder?

i'm also looking to get the 343c portable edition for my small 2 man plastic bass boat. i was also thinking about getting the lowrance x510c because of the screen size and the brightness...but to make that unit portable will cost me around $430 to where i can get the 343c portable for $280 total.
