Ya, I have always felt that salmon were a little bit more dependant on the eggs than steelhead. I think the SF Cw sometimes falls into those low, clear, finisky, conditions. Not sure what the water was like when you were up there though. I think it was steelienut that said for salmon: fish like steelhead except everything is bigger. That's very true (including the inverse). I am constantly amazed at how steelhead are even able to spot those rediculously small lures drifting by(particulary when the water colors up), but they sure as heck do. So eggs can still outproduce everything else like they are supposed to, the trick is just to use them to build a steelhead size lure on your hook. Furthermore, I have heard that some of the people who regularly thrash the fish up there on the SF will use like 8 pound test, a split shot, and a glow bug on a teeny (like #16 size hook). I have always felt that any anadromous run of fish starts acting real goofy once they get to the upper reaches of their home river as well.
