That's the key. Hard lures are so hit or miss that you can spend a ton of cash trying to find what works. You can have a box full of $25 crankbaits and still get skunked in a tourney.
As for Lucky Craft, I think they are quality baits. You'll notice much finer details molded into the more expensive hard baits and usually a more detailed paint job. I don't know how much that matters since the baits are usually motoring along pretty well.

The link above is a Lucky Craft bait that I try to keep on hand at all times. It works best in warmer water and 4 or 5 feet of water, maximum.
As far as crankbaits go, some of the best crankbait fishermen (Elite pros) fish cheap crankbaits. Rick Horton fishes Bomber and Kevin Van Dam fishes Strike King. Either of those can be had for $4.50 to $7.00 a pop.
