Good first baitcaster for bass
#22
Well, since I wrote this post last year, I've gone almost exclusively to baitcasters. I ended up selling the old Curado and Citica which were great, but I started shaving weight off my set-ups. The new Curados are 7.6 oz which is 2 oz lighter than the old one. I have 3 of the new Curado 200E7's and a 6.1 oz Core 100MG which is awesome to say the least. For me, these are the major advantages...

#1. Weight. A typical 2500 or 3000 series spinning reel weighs 10 to 13 ounces with 9.5 being extremely light. A typical 100 or 200 size baitcaster is 7 to 10 ounces with a really light one at or under 6. The lighter the weight in your hands, the more you'll feel a strike, even when they are subtle. Even with an expensive, light spinning rod, you're still handicapped by the reel weight.

#2. Sensitivity. I love being able to palm the reel and touch the line while still being in position to set the hook. There's nothing that adds to sensitivity like touching the line at the reel.

Other than that, the spinning reel is easier to use, in general. I've only got one spinning set-up for drop shot/spider jigs/light jerkbaits. Everything else is thrown on baitcasting stuff.
