Personally I use almost exclusively gamakatsu hooks anymore. On the other hand I still managed to lose 4 fish on them this year so far. As for nighttime fishing for steelies I've used plugs that flash with a red LED in them. We were trolling in the confluence of the Snake/clearwater rivers in Lewiston though. Don't know how you would work it in Ellis really. I can't say I would recomend a boat trip at dark. Like was said, probly use a glow in the dark corky and something that really has smell, be it roe, shrimp or just some added attractant.
