My favorite rods are the shakespeare catfish specials from walmart, (35$). I dont catch giant fish but they are very study rods with good sensitivity too. They are 20-35lb line and i think med-heavy action..
A little tip that i heard somewhere when learning to throw a baitcaster is to pull off about 30ft of line (or however far you want to cast) and put a piece of duct tape or electrical tape. Then let up on your drag and get used to slowing the spool down with your thumb. So, if you mess up, it will only tangle down to the tape.
Dont give up on learning how to throw a baitcaster, it is tough at first for everyone, but 99% of people that stick with it will say it was worth it. They are a superior reel, and look wayyy cooler too!
