Floating line with a weighted fly or some split shot. You can cast up stream stripping line as it gets closer to you, You can cast in front slightly up stream lifting your rod as it crosses in front of you ( to keep slack out for quick set) You can cast in front of you and let it drift down. Both these styles require mending the line(the loop or slack up stream) so the fly floats with no drag or resistance from the line. Or you can cast down stream and wiggle line out as it drifts down.
With a sinking line. You will NOT be casting up stream, you could cast up in front, but generally straight out or slightly down letting it swing in at the end of the drift. This would be for streamers, and nymphs. You need to keep the line more tight. On a sinking line, you are not going to see the hit like you will with a floating, plus it will be harder setting the hook with all the line under water also. Does that make sense?
A tandem set-up is fishing more than one fly. Although allot of people refer to ONE fly with two hooks as a Tandem. But in truth TANDEM is like a Hopper Dropper or Two nymphs...or more where legal.
ARTICULATED is a fly that is two piece like the bunny.
