You have a good strategy as far as recognizing a potential hog hole and tying on something else. It might have to do with how sneaky you are. I am used to staying in the water most of the time but i think it scares the fish as your approaching. I am sure that you know this. My point is
In rivers alike and that river if there are even little fish spooking back into the deeper holes then the big fish get lock jaw and the little ones get caught. I have caught a lot of huge browns on rivers using a spinner and launching it up two holes up past the one I am standing in(I know this question is for streamers but spinners always tell me a story.)It would be very hard to do that with a fly rod so one thing I do is stay out of the water till I get to the hole so they cant feel the vibrations of the bed rocks. I am fishing and sneaking around like a dang SWAT team member some times. BUT if you can get to a hole and not disturb it and I mean really not disturb it you wont even need to switch to a streamer. The dries will be seen and the big fish will box all the little ones out like a 7'4'' basketball player tryin for a rebound. I am not the best on streamers but I am always learning from experiences.
I think you should still keep trying your techniques also.
