A 5wt will not work for 1 simple reason, it takes too long to land them and you will most likely kill them if you fight them that long. You should have atleast an 8wt IMHO.
As far as leader, i have had good luck with 30# mono. Never had them cut it and it is very strong and abrasion resistant.[
