ice fishing pitfalls
#2
Thanks for the tips,

ya know the old saying, one good tip deserves another.

I find the limp rods excellent for crappie (noodle type), I have even had good luck catching pike on the limp rod. As a setline, the whole rod becomes the bobber. Be sure to have your drag set light, you can always tighten the drag if you need once the hook is set.

I use a 5 gallon bucket half full of water and minnows and a rod clip to hold it in place, Ya I have had to go jigging for my rod on the bottom of the lake because I have used other rod holders and empty 5 gallon buckets and large fish have run off pulling the rod down the hole.

In Michigan we have been allowed to have two lines for a number of years, starting of the 2009 season we will be allowed 3 lines in the water.

This is excellent for us because it gives us ice anglers premium fishing strategies that allow us to target small medium and large species at the same time. As it may be, we can only have one line in our hand at a time, but many of us like to use set lines, I my self use a tip-up for pike and walleye, I use a limp rod set for crappie and a stiffer rod with a spring wire bobber at the end of my rod in hand working for gills.

Here is a tip you may want to try; I use Pam spray on my auger to keep ice and water from sticking on them extreme cold blustery days. “Yep, Pam cooking spray” I even use it on my snowplow in the winter on those wet snow days. A little bit goes a long way; I have one of those small 12-ounce cans that I have used on my auger and snowplow blade that I have used now for 3 years.

In the spring when you put it away, be sure to hand wipe the augers clean of water spots then spray it down lightly with WD-40 and wipe dry again
