I got my kids up at the crack of dawn made the traditional stop at Maverick for choclate milk and donuts and then headed to the lake.
We were drilling holes at 6:30. My son was putting in the lines as I baited them when he started screaming that the Kokanee were right under the ice. He pulled up two and my younger son pulled up one. Then they were gone. I wasn't worried since the last week has been so hot. I thought that it was just a matter of time until they came in. I was wrong. Picked up a couple more lone kokanee before noon for a total of five. In the downtime we managed to get seven perch and four trout commit.
We were fishing in 35-50 ft of water with swedish pimples and various small ice flies in pink, and chartruse.
Just goes to show how fast you can become spoiled. We ended up with 16 fish and it seemed ultra slow. Guess I need to eat humble pie and return to normal earthly ice fishing.
It was great to meat several BFT members out on the ice. Steelfisher (my neighbor) came out to meet me. He caught one Kokanee to keep the skunk off before he had to go. As Maghunter said, he and his dad Magdaddy were fishing nearby they stopped by to say hi. Pokeyfisher also stopped in to introduce himself. I saw redleech out there also. To all those who came by to put a face with a name thanks for stopping by.
We should have a BFT get together. The ice is a perfect place for social fishing. We will have to plan way ahead of time next year.
