Allot of great suggestion here I agree with either going with either a Dell or a IBM I would lean more toward a IBM Lenovo Thinkpad, Ideapad or a Dell Studio.
Both are pretty sound latops have great warranties and have great customer support.
Definitely go with a Intel core2duo Processor and the max ram that fits your budget. On a side note allot of laptops dont have upgradable processors its not like in a desktop so try to get the latest processor that fits your needs.
Getting a larger screen is always better little more costly but better viewing. One alternative is docking station. A docking station will accomidate a monitor, full size keyboard, mouse basically like having a desktop with a press of a button can be undocked and the laptop can be taken with you.
