I have noticed this same problem when I have tried to use 5X with a large dry like a hopper. The solution for the hopper problem has been to move to a larger diameter tippet (3 or 4X). It has not seemed to bother the fish much. I generally reserve 7X for very picky fish and very small dries (size 26 or smaller). I have had better success using 6X with most BWO dries (size 18 to 24).
