Mine is the 10' four piece and no I don't think the amount of pieces makes a difference. It did in the old days, but now the ferrules go up far enough.
There has been talk the ODD number of pieces like 3 or 5 being better because of the harmonics....that could be true cause allot of the high end rods are 3 piece.
The 30 ft is the norm, but it too may vary slightly. DT is designed more for shorter distant because of the longer into a one size running to another long tapper.
Weight forward the taper is shorter then into a smaller running line. Easier to mend and longer distance because it loads at a longer distance.
Up to 50' however, the difference is not that noticeable, and not many of us go over that on a constant.
But as I said you have the specialty lines like smaller diameter lines (Sylk and Superfine for two) less resistance on the guides. You also have in WF, Long bell, and Windcutter, plus the species lines.
There is a perfect line for everyone, but it takes some looking. For me it is ONLY weight Forward, I don't care for the thicker running line on a DT.
A fast 8 weight could be taxing. I DO have a BIIx which is a fast action, but it feels like a 5 weight in the hand, so not bad at all. I also have a Trident 10' 8 wt with the fighting butt so it to is well balanced. It is a med flex.
