Sturgeon Help
#7
i would highly suggest getting a larger rod/reel combo for sturgeon, the main reason is (according to the sturgeon survey that came out by fish and game at the end of the summer) that when you are fighting a sturgeon, you need to be able to reel them in fairly quickly, get the hook out, and release them. you don't want them to get too tired or too exhausted because it isn't healthy for them, and some of the weaker ones may die. i like to go fishing with a rod that is rated for at least 40lb test line and a penn 330 reel. i usually use 60-80lb test line, with a 7/0 or 8/0 circle hook. a circle hook will prevent you from gut-hooking the sturgeon. i choose to fish with a 12 foot xtra heavy ugly stick. haha, they can grow over 10 feet so its nice to have large equipment for you and the fish's benefit.
