This Report is for May 13, 2003 (Monday)
Southern California Saltwater Roundup
Up North: Channel Islands
Although the numbers are down on WSB, the weather is not a too small factor on how many boats will get out. The Jeanne, one of the most consistant producers during the last 3 or 4 days not only caught WSB but scored a yellowtail as well. I almost wonder what he was doin' around there now. ha ha
LA Area: Catalina
Although the weather was not that fantastic today and the wind started to kick a bit after 5pm, the return was not bad at all. There were decent to limit counts on the WSB for boats fishing the dawn or early morning bite. Otherwise, 3/4 sportfishers that went out, got the calicos, barracuda, sheepshead and assorted others. Sealions were hanging around but the fish were hungry. A number of 3/4 day boats plan on going to Catalina tomorrow. I'll be on the Pierpoint and we'll see where they go!
Kinda South Coast: San Clemente
Didn't hear much on either the WSB or yellowtail but I doubt if anything spetacular happened. Private Boaters seem to OK at this island even when Catalina is down. Will dig deeper tomorrow.
San Diego: Coronados
Most boats that hit the island, came back with yellowtail. So what else is new. Fish are still in the high-teens to mid-twenties.
Other: Santa Monica Bay local fishing doesn't have the halibut bite on now so it's pretty rough. For the Los Angeles/South Bay areas, the water is pretty dirty but some barracuda are being caught. The good news is that there's LIVE SQUID avaliable for the overnighters and 3/4 day boats. Otherwise, you'll see anchovies and sardines in the bait tank.
I've gotta say it again. If you've got a buddy, now's the time to look for those two for one deals. Some landings are planning on sending out boats to look for albacore signs. I guess gold fever ain't nothin' compared to albie fever.
