Whats the best distance to catch fish in a pond?

Before i start to say anything. I just wanted to let you guys know that all the advice and tips on here is very useful. I just recently started to fish at this pond near my house. So far i have caught large mouth bass, carps, sun fish, eels, and unfortunately some turtles. I notice whenever i throw it really far out to the middle of the pond, nothing seems to bite at all. But when i throw it about 20 feet out or so, theres always something biting. Mainly small ones though. Any advice or reasoning for this one? I am planning to go again this weekend.
