Crawdads

This saturday i'm going over to a friends house. He has a some good water behind it. Directly behind his house there is a stream. The stream turns into a small river, then the river empties into a medium sized pond. What he usually does is, he goes to the stream and catches crawdads, then hooks them through the tail and casts them in the pond or river. I prefer to use artificial bait. I went to Academy and bought a small crawdad crank, and two larger crawdad cranks. I also picked up a a few "Zoom" scented softies. I doubt there are any huge bass in there, but any suggestions (between large/ small, and soft/ crank) and how to fish them?
Help would be much appreciated.
