korea bound fishing
#11
not true. if your getting stationed at osan and want to fish that bad, head out the main gate, snag a cab and tell the driver you want to go to the river next to Camp Humphries. 99% know exactly where you are talking about. they will take you to this lodge looking'ish place thats about 2 miles from the main gate at humphries and about 11miles from osan. you can rent a river side "cabin" for about 50,000 WON (like 55 bucks) for the night and have a blast. im not sure of the rivers name, but i know for absosulte certanty (sp) they have large mouth in that river due to the fact my buddy caught 5 when we partied out there. they have trout fishing also near Tactical Area (TA) Tom and TA Jerry. there is a rather large river that flows through both TA's and it has some kind of trout. they are cherry red, but have the body of a rainbow. i fished thiose rivers during exercises and actually caught a few. i DO NOT trust the quality of enviroment, so there fore i did not eat anything that we caught. in the river near osan/the hump, they have carp, some wierd ass lookming cat fish, and something that resembles a drum. if you take the train to Yongsan (trust me, you will not be the oddball with the fishing gear in the train, you will be looked at loike everyone else, i miss the blind guy walking through the trian begging for money, he cant see, yet when he dropped 5000WON he knew exactly where it went) you get off at yongsan station. hail a cab and ask him to take you to the tourist fishing club. i cant recall the web site off the top of my head and will have to do some looking for ya. anywho, he takes you to this little club thats on the banks of the Han river. you can hire a boat for a few hours at a very resopnable rate and hell take you anywhere you want to fish. lots of back sloughs, and rip rap to fish. you will see alot of ranger bass boats there, bass fishing is HUGE in korea, and Japan (while i was in both countries) and its not odd at all for one of these guys to come up tol you and say hello, and ask in broken english how the fishing is.

your actually heading at a great time, looks like curfew is slowly being scaled back, and if your on leave status in the country it doesent apply to you. dont get stuck at osan like i did alot (ie i was in the bars more then i was on base). i actually had to get out and find this stuff out for myself. it did help that the bar i visited the most, the bar owner, she was married to a retired military member, and he loves to fish! he was the one that pointed me in the right direction for fishing all of the time.

outside of thew CPX gate (the back gate) of osan, there is actually a little tackle shop, it was always neat and fun going in there!

the best bar (where i got my info) was two blocks out the Main gate, next to the Thai resturant called The Apple. its a sports bar, ie no juicies (trust me if you dont know what they are you will, and FAST!). when you go in there ask for "momma" and when you introduce yourself, tell her Coke (just like the drink) says hello!
