I use a 40 inch long drift sock to slow my 12 foot long inflatable boat down to ½ mile an hour trolling speed. I use a 30 pound thrust Minn Kota electric trolling motor.
I can catch Channel Catfish at ½ mile an hour. That why I bought the drift sock.
Warning: If you use a drift sock to slow your trolling speed: this is especially for those who use inflatables or any small watercraft. Take note that if you "drag" the drift sock behind your boat at slow speed, the drift sock will obnoxiously sway from side to side if placed to far behind your boat. I place mine right behind my boat very very close to the rear! Although its awful close to the trolling motor the drift sock will sway from side to side making it a major pain to slow-troll straight. Take note that this is for only when you troll at slow speed. If you troll at 1 to 3 miles you can place the drift sock behind your boat as far as you like, but at slow speeds beware!
Also I recommend to not buy drift socks with pornographic pictures on the sock. Otherwise you can get a ticket from the DWR.
