New to fishing. Need tips on situation.

Hey Ratlations! Its nice to meet you! I'm new to fishing too and if you are ever looking for someone to discuss these matters with I'd be honored to learn the sport with you!

As far as your questions go, I myself don't worry about a fancy rig. No swivels or anything like that. In fact I hardly ever use live bait. For me a nice Palomar knot and a top-water frog have done me wonders! I've also been experimenting with Buzz Bait and Rattle Traps for Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass.
