brand is mostly subjective, but since you asked I'll include that.

I'd pick up some gary yamamoto 5 and 7" senkos (yum dingers are a nice replacement for those also) in laminated shad or smelt colors as well as watermelon or pumpkinseed. yamamoto fat ika and DT hula grub in natural colors also. (i like the coke color for a crayfish imitation on several local lakes)

also, some suspending jerkbaits. I like lucky craft and the old standard rapalas. you'll want to match colors according to your forage and conditions, but I use more perch patterns than anything.

grab a couple of titanium spinnerbaits - I use terminators. I like white, white/chartreuse, black and perch colors. grab a couple of the tiny terminators, too, for a more finesse style or for smallies.

grab some plastic worms - 5" roboworms in laminated shad, 7" berkley squirmers and some 10" power worms to start.

yum crawbug for a slow, natural craw imitation. sometimes they just don't want to hit anything but a crayfish...won't even hit a jig with a craw trailer. so it's good to have something like a yum crawbug or huddleston huddlebug on hand. you can get away with not having these, though, by getting some coke colored gary yamamoto doubletail hula grubs or fat ikas. they imitate a crayfish very well and also give you flexibility in presentation. I'd say only grab the crawbug or huddlebug if you're fishing gin clear water and they won't feed on anything but crawdads.

even if I were just starting out I'd probably grab more lures than this, but these things will catch fish for me without worry.
