family fishing near Rexburg
#2
Having four young boys I happen to be an expert at family fishing in the Rexburg area.[cool]

Options

1. Rexburg Nature Pond: I would hit it early in the morning before all of the 4th of July planters are taken out. The fishing is usually easy. I use a worm and marshmallow (garlic) combo on a size 10 hook. I use a small slip sinker 12-18" from the hook. The wind is usually blowing in Rexburg so a worm and marshmallow to get the bait out of the weeds is usually better than a bobber.

We also catch the planter on small panther martins.

I also catch them on small leeches, just might be a bit crowded for fly fishing.

If you are really lucky you might get into one of the elusive Rexburg Nature Pond goldfish.

2. Roberts Gravel Pond: South of town go to the Menan turnoff go through Menan and into Roberts. Go Left in Roberts and follow the road until you see the fish and game sign. Takes about 30 min from Rexburg

Roberts has small perch by the millions. It should also be stocked for the 4th of July with planters.

I use the same setup for the Roberts planters. The perch will take small flies on a bubble. The lake is only 6' deep so it is just a matter of finding the fish. The planters usually rise in the evening and are easy to spot.

3. Ashton Reservoir: If you want to go 30 min North go to were the N. Fork of the Snake runs into Ashton Res. Take a left as you cross the Ashton bridge.

This section is heavily stocked and heavily fished. You can either work your way down the cliffs or if you are lucky get the spot at the end of the fishermans access dock. Either way rig up with a worm and marshmellow (garlic) combo and cast straight across the current. Feel your line for strikes the stockers usually pick it up as it straightens out. I have never had a really slow morning or evening at this location but you may have competition on the 4th of July weekend.

4. Warm River Campground: If you want to flyfish this is the place. I use small nymphs such as hares ears or prince. I also use small parachute adams for dries.

For bait use a single salmon egg on a very small hook. Drift the egg across the river with a small weight or a bubble.

Warm River will be heavily stocked for the 4th, but again you may see more people than you care for.

Good luck and let us know how you did.
