Few people know or remember that having a armed population kept the Japanese from making a landing attack on the US during world war II.
They were afraid of the number of weapons in all the houses on the west coast.
They did however, attack US forces on the Aleution Island chain, and many lives were lost on both sides before it was over.
Remember, the first thing that a government will do, to take over the population, is register and remove all fire arms from the population.
