I play it by ear, but I do start off with them HOOK SHANK length. Sometimes you feel the sudtle hits and then nothing. I am assuming they are grabbing tail and no hook, so I shorten the tail and it generally fixes the problem.
When fishing a BAIT FISH fly however, I leave the tail lone, cause they will usually attack the head of the baitfish. That is where when you feel the hit is a slow long strip them stop. Like the baitfiah runs then stops in shock. The attacker will usually go back after it .
