on the idea that trout dont eat other fish very often. Perhaps the perceptoin of fly fishing has tainted the characteristics of trout in general? Planter rainbows as the exception i have not seen the primary food source for trout in rivers or lakes for trout. Any place that has a natural producing population and decent size fish in it that is. Browns more than anything dont feed on flies exclusively. Cutts for sure dont and brookies well they are a different breed. Rainbows, i have caught more rainbows with crawfish in them than i can count. Pulled large rainbwos out of our reservoirs just to have them regurgitate 5 small frye they just gorged on. Walk the shorelines this time of year and walk the large trout hammer the shores for the frye. Especially when they dump the shiners in strawberry.
Im only saying this because it surprised me to see the idea of trout as timid weak fish in the ecosystem. I would say they are one of the best predators around for fresh water. Just my opinion though.
