How do you read a scrolling screen on Fish-finders?

The far right is what is now. Everything moving to the left is the history of what the finder said was there in the past. The farther to the left the longer it was since the finder saw it. Moving or sitting still makes no difference to the finder or the readings on the screen. It takes a picture of now and then slowly moves it to the left.
