Lone hunter that was interesting to read and I'm glad that post got you thinking, to bad it doesn't have the same effect on the rest of the world. I seem to have that effect on people. I'm from Utah and the DWR does a excellent job with the 23 million they have to work with. Every year their is less and less money for the projects, hatcheries, jobs and stocking of fish. I pay 34 dollars for a small game and fishing license and I would gladly pay 100 dollars or more for what we have in Utah.
I'm not familiar with the way funding is in Michigan but if it's like Utah's then the majority of the budget comes from license sales and a small amount comes from private institutions and state allocated funding which isn't included in the budget.
The law enforcement or conservation officers work for the DWR and is included in the budget. Most people in the world seen to be dishonest and I'm sure every state could use a dozen or more officers. I'm not saying your dishonest but if people didn't break the law than why do we lock our doors and spend billions on crime prevention. Most people I know mean to be honest and obey the law but officers keep honest people honest as well as put criminals where they belong. If they are closing areas then it's probable for the best. Remember it's the ones that don't obey the law are the ones that make it tough for everybody else.
Utah doesn't have a lottery but the main issue with those are who runs them state or private. I've noticed that state ran lotteries tend to generate more funds all the way around as well as a bigger pot. Private lotteries tend to line their own pockets first and then people or the state. As far as not paying for college anybody that makes less than 25,000 should be given a grant to pay for everything but with the way the world is the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It's a terrible thing but it seems like people that are poor don't care because if they did then they would do something about it. Consider this Bill Gates has enough money to get everybody in America out of debt if we all were in debt 250,000. Makes you sick just thinking about it.
I don't know about the land being sold or Michigan's DNR being broke but I'm sure they don't do it with out good reason. Most of the land in Utah is BLM and Forest service land and they trade only if they get the better end of the deal. It's tough to get them to do it so the person that does end up trading doesn't get much of a deal.
I spend all my time hunting, fishing, and getting involved and doing something to help out. I don't like to read magazine because most of the articles are for some other state. I'd rather read stories or talk to the DWR about what's going on with our wildlife. Out here in Utah we have something called a rack meeting which the DWR brings up all the current proposals and the public can give their 2 cents. The entire community as a whole is represented so it's not just DWR officials. This system works great and I've seen some of the best arguments their. It's definitely something to look into.
Sounds to me like you really care about whats happening. I don't belong to any clubs or organization and you might want to consider that the info they give is biased so take what you want from it but consider the other half of the story.
